The Independent

There wasn't much to laugh about in Bouquet of Barbed Wire, in which each character is unhappier and less sympathetic than the next. That's unless you're of the view, as some seem to be, that it's a load of overwrought cobblers. In our house we're enjoying it hugely, but only once the children have gone to bed.

A time, indeed, when Andrea Newman was a giantess of the idiot lantern. The 70s version of the chattering classes watched her dramas, pretended to loathe them, and tuned in again the next week. The critics called them "hypnotic schlock" and "irresistible bilge". I didn't know any better and loved them completely. And now? I still love them....
