Tom Riley has received wide critical acclaim for his stage, television and film performances, although he is perhaps best known for his television roles - most recently as Leonardo da Vinci in Starz Da Vinci's Demons, as Laurence Shepherd in ITV's Monroe, as Gavin Sorensen in ITV's Bouquet Of Barbed Wire, and as Mr Wickham in ITV's Lost In Austen. His lead film roles include Happy Ever Afters, I Want Candy and A Few Days In September.
Along with superlative reviews, Tom has also received awards recognition for his stage performances. These include a nomination in the 2011 Drama Desk Awards for his role as Septimus Hodge in Arcadia on Broadway, and a nomination in the 2010 Off West End Theatre Awards for his role as Bach in Hurts Given and Received. Tom's other theatre credits include the 2011 world premiere of Stephen Poliakoff's My City and numerous productions at the Royal Court Theatre.
For BBC Radio 4 play Henry's Demons, Tom received a special commendation as Best Actor in the 2012 BBC Audio Drama Awards.
Tom was involved in drama in his home town of Maidstone, Kent from the age of four and spent his school years writing and directing plays. He studied English Literature and Drama at Birmingham University, graduating in 2002 with first class honours and set up a small theatre company before deciding to go to drama school. He started the three year Professional Acting Course at LAMDA the same year, completing his studies in 2005. Even though it meant he spent six years as a student, he believes his current success has proved it worthwhile.
Tom's ultimate aim in his profession is just to do work that he can take pride in; that he would want to show to his friends; that he would seek out if he were not in it and that his heroes would enjoy. He acknowledges that it is not an easy path to follow but is encouraged to stick to it as best he can, whilst still trying not to take himself too seriously.
Tom's work ethic in 5 words: Do good work. Enjoy it.
